Not sure what "wordjazz" means, but these words did not come together to form any kind of melody for me. Stevie's short life, wholly dependent on her parents and medical devices for basic biological survival, changed the lives of those who loved her, by making them better human beings.
Stevie's parents did not get the amniotic fluid test for Down Syndrome and only discovered her medical condition upon her birth. Chamberlain was profoundly saddened by this news, he decided to fight for his daughter's life and did his best to make her life as comfortable and happy as he possibly could, despite Stevie's comorbid complications and her parents' battles with incompetent and unsympathetic medical professionals.
The author consulted the best authorities on Down Syndrome in England and Italy because he could not find adequate professional support and services in Hong Kong where he and his wife lived at the time. Stevie's travails taught her father about the true meaning of love, deep pain, sacrifice, humanity. In today's world, many parents whose fetuses test positive for Down Syndrome choose not to sacrifice the status quo of their family life by sacrificing the life of the fetus. Summary How could a girl born with a genetic defect - who later suffered brain damage leaving her blind, epileptic and physically handicapped, and who lived only eight years - change the world? Wordjazz for Stevie is a letter written to Stevie by her father after she had died to try to explain to her and the world the meaning of her life.
While the world discriminates against "imperfect" children, Jonathan Chamberlain loved his daughter Stevie with his whole being.
Instead of seeing her as a liability, he saw her as a gift from God, if he believed in God. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful.
Stevie arrives in the world when expat Jonathan and his Chinese wife are living on a quiet island off Hong Kong. Although shocked to learn Stevie has Down syndrome, Jonathan and Bern immediately accept the additional challenges this presents, challenges that increase significantly when an operation to close a hole in Stevie's heart goes horribly wrong, starving her of oxygen and resulting in severe disability. Towards the end of Stevie's short-but-delight-giving years, little does Jonathan know her failing health is not the only major life-changing event on the horizon.
But putting the textbooks aside, it's simply a touching and enlightening story that should inspire all who read it.
