He is a huge aid in her escape. There are plenty of surprises and wisdom from secondary characters as things come to a head with the dark fairies and the light fairies, pirates, bordering kingdoms, etc. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This book did all I was hoping it would do. World building took a few more steps, characters made questionable decisions and the story started to focus more on the events transpiring.
Now being a man I feel my opinion varies slightly in that I understand or maybe relate? I loved this book so much and was infuriated by it at the same time. That is indeed the sign of a wonderfully created story I couldn't stop thinking about it, at work, doing cardio cooking dinner, like dam what was s character 2 thinking!
Randomly thinking to myself, my boy Jon over here making catastrophically terrible decisions and I completely understand them. This boy gets kicked to the ground dragged a few miles then kicked for a few hours And he deserves it. No longer the good and holy paladin, the crown weighs heavy indeed.
Rielle goes through hell and than gets kicked down hereself. She is no longer the powerful mage we saw in the first book, circumstances are not favorable for here at all. Brennan is trying to be a decent human being but through certain things he does I just don't trust the not so friendly wolf man. The book goes to some dark places but has areas of light.
Some characters own up and mature, some are weighd down by their decisions. The Crucibles that are gone through change our hero's who are not really hero's at all, just people trying to make the best out of terrible decisions. Dig in and you will be rewarded! I loved this book even more than the first one. Usually, the second book in a trilogy makes me hate the series and the characters, but somehow with this book, I just ended up loving the characters even more.
They are all faced with very difficult decisions, but I feel like the motivation and reasoning behind each decision is very clear and understandable even if some of those decisions are the wrong ones!
The character development and world building is superb and each character feels so real. It is dark and there are a lot of hard moments, and it played with my emotions significantly. However, I really appreciate that the characters seem to learn and grow and be better from their experiences which helped the book end on a hopeful note for me despite some of the sad things that happen. The story stayed with me and I find myself obsessively checking for updates on the next book. This book surprised me and has vaulted this series to one of new favorites. I will note that there are some explicit scenes in the book which normally lessen my enjoyment of a book because they feel too awkward and forced and unnecessary.
However, I appreciate that there weren't many, the book is clearly plot based, and the scenes were tastefully done. My third read from author Miranda Honfleur. Not a HEA romance but some real romance with its challenges. Well-written, outstanding character developed in great detail with an unseen surprise thrown in near the end of this first book.
No spoilers from me, this is a must-read for fantasy lovers! It is one emotional high after another. Rielle finds herself kidnapped and in deep trouble. Her life is at risk. Never dark or low for long, Honfleur makes sure to give us glorious bits of relief. The other characters pull you in just as much. I support both of them, but this has me torn in all the right places. The romance was superb. The steamy scenes just steamy enough.

The Blade Itself was released to very positive reviews. Writing for The Guardian , author Jon Courtenay Grimwood said that "for once, the novel comes close to living up to its publisher's hype", and Strange Horizons's Siobhan Carroll said that "fans of character-driven epics who are willing to take their heroes with a grain of moral ambiguity should add this novel to their "must read" list.

Eric Brown reviewed Red Country for The Guardian and said that Abercrombie was "tipping his hat to the Western genre but continuing his mission to drag fantasy, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century with his characteristic mix of gritty realism, complex characterisation, set-piece scenes of stomach-churning violence and villains who are as fully rounded as his flawed heroes" and concluded that the book was "a marvellous follow-up to his highly praised The Heroes.
